Abstract: The commercialization of ornamental pepper plants has been growing in the national and international floriculture markets. In spite of this growth, there are still few available cultivars for ornamental purposes, suggesting a need for improvement programs in this segment. Given the exposed, this work aimed to select genotypes with ornamental pepper potential using multivariate analysis. The work was performed in a plant nursery at the Campus of Agricultural Sciences of the Federal University of Paraíba (UFPB). One segregating F4 (17.15) population was used, analyzing 16 qualitative and quantitative morphological descriptors. The experimental design was completely randomized. 45 plants belonging to an F4 segregating population were evaluated. Singh’s criterion was adopted to quantify the relative contribution of the characteristics. Afterward, Tocher’s clustering method based on the generalized distance of Mahalanobis was used for the quantitative variables. Gower’s distance was employed for the qualitative variables, and afterward, a joint analysis with qualitative and quantitative data was performed, using the sum of distances of both types of variables. Furthermore, a non-metric multidimensional scaling was applied.  Based on qualitative traits 14 clusters were formed. Multidimensional scaling based on quantitative traits the most divergent genotypes were 17, 12, 36, 23, and 19. According to the analysis performed the genotypes 12, 16, 19, 15, 29, 41 and 44 are indicated to open line in F5 generation. Keywords: diversity, gower, Mahalanobis, ornamental plant

Visual illusions and spatial disorientation are common causes of air accidents and incidents, especially during low-visibility flight conditions in small aircraft. It is therefore essential that pilots receive training regarding adaptation of the visual and vestibular systems to the aerospace environment. This project aimed to develop a device capable of simulating different visual illusions and aspects related to central and peripheral vision (colour and visual acuity), through the use of smartphones with OLED display technology (model: Galaxy S5 SM-G900M, screen: 5.1 inches, 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution, 432 pixels per inch). The phone was coupled with augmented reality glasses (model: ColorCross 3D Virtual Reality) with a 70 mm focal length lens, supporting devices of 4 to 6 inches. The smartphone is attached to the front of the glasses, giving an impression of three-dimensionality, and the visual tests are either transmitted from a computer or saved on the device itself. The images and videos selected, such as the Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test and Cambridge Colour Test, are commonly used in pilot training and are validated for use in clinical ophthalmology. Technical adaptations were necessary so these tests functioned adequately on the smartphone. Both tests are designed exclusively for use on a computing platform and, therefore, the Trinus VR application was first used to convert the computer image to 3D, before making it available on the smartphone screen. This solution for training pilots in visual illusions during low-visibility flight scenarios using smartphones with OLED displays is easy to implement, user-friendly and low-cost. Mobile technology adaptation for use in aviation training is of great value, as it can have a positive influence on the reduction of human errors that can result from alterations in human physiology secondary to exposure to the aerospace environment, thereby reducing the occurrence of air accidents and incidents

One of the main objectives of applying edible coatings on fruits surface is to create a protective film to reduce weight loss due to evaporation and transpiration and also to decrease the risk of fruit rot caused by environmental contamination, in order to improve the visual aspect. Therefore, it is possible to increase shelf life, and decrease post harvest losses. Persimmon is a much appreciated fruit, with high potential for export, but sensitive to handling and storage. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of applying the edible coating Megh Wax ECF-124 (18% of active composts, consisting of emulsion of carnauba wax, anionic surfactant, preservative and water) produced by Megh Industry and Commerce Ltda in three different concentrations (25, 50 and 100%) on post harvest quality of 'Fuyu' persimmon stored for 14 days. The attributes evaluated for quality were: firmness, pH, acidity, soluble solids, weight loss and color. The results showed that application of carnauba wax in different concentrations was effective on decreasing weight loss of persimmon cv. Fuyu and maintenance of color aspects. Treatment at lower concentration, 25%, showed lower rate of discharge, but high concentrations showed lower values of mass loss. Carnauba wax application showed a high potential for use on postharvest conservation, and can be applied together with other technologies, helping to maintain quality for export.

Strong increase in the production of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) observed over the years has led to a consolidation of transgenic seed industries worldwide. The dichotomy between the evaluated risk and the perceived risk of transgenic use has defined their level of acceptability among different global societies. GMOs have been widely applied to agricultural commodities, among them the Roundup Ready™ (RR™) soybean line GTS 40-3-2 has become the most prevalent transgenic crop in the world. This variety was developed to confer plant tolerance against glyphosate-based agricultural herbicide Roundup Ready™. Issues related to detection and traceability of GMOs have gained worldwide interest due to their increasing global diffusion and the related socioeconomic and health implications. Also, due to the widespread use of GMOs in food production, labelling regulations have been established in some countries to protect the right of consumers and producers. Besides regulatory demand, consumer concern issues have resulted in the development of several methods of detecting and quantifying foods derived from genetically engineered crops and their raw materials. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) has been proven to be the method of choice to detect the presence or absence of the introduced genes of GMOs at DNA level. The present paper aims to verify whether the PCR technique can detect RR™ soybean seeds among conventional ones to further certification as non-GM soybean seeds and grains. This analysis could be accomplished through the development of new methodology called \u27intentional contamination\u27 of soybean conventional seeds or grains with the respective RR™ soybeans. The results show that the PCR method can be applied with high sensitivity in order to certify conventional soybean seeds and grains.

    Get PDF
Back pain in athletes varies with sport, age, and sex, which can impair athletic performance, thereby contributing to retirement. Studies on back pain in this population use questionnaires to assess components, such as pain intensity and location and factors associated with pain, among others. This study aimed to review validated questionnaires that have assessed back pain in athletes. This systematic review was conducted according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) by searching the databases Embase, MEDLINE, SPORTDiscus, CINAHL, and Scopus. The articles were selected regardless of language and date of publication. Titles and abstracts were independently selected by two reviewers; disagreements were resolved by a third reviewer. All the steps were conducted using the software Rayyan. The methodological quality of the questionnaire validation articles was assessed using a critical appraisal tool checklist proposed by Brink and Louw. The search returned 4748 articles, of which 60 were selected for this review, including 5 questionnaire validation studies. These articles were published between 2004 and 2022, which were performed in more than 20 countries, particularly Germany (14) and Sweden (5). Thirteen different instruments were identified, of which 46.1% were developed in Europe. The most commonly used questionnaires were the Oswestry Disability Index and Nordic Standardized Questionnaire. In addition, five questionnaire validation studies were selected for methodological quality assessment, with only two studies demonstrating high methodological quality. The following three instruments were identified for assessing back pain specifically in athletes: Micheli Functional Scale, Persian Functional Rating Index, and Athlete Disability Index. This review confirmed that all three instruments were specifically designed to assess this condition
